Hi Bob, I was inspired by Tom Nuccio's demonstration at the ACS convention and I really want to plant camellia seeds! The only problem is that none of my tiny retics set seed this year. Do you know anyone who has retic seeds they would be willing to share? Thanks!
Nancy, I will supply you with retic seeds. They will be ready to pick in the next week or two. Be thinking about your planting boxes and medium for germinating them. I use redwoob boxes about 14 inches square and 8 inches deep, My medium is primarily my soil mix with lots more sponge rock and sand added. I plant them as soon as picked and keep on the (not too wet)mode. Once you plant them you rarely have to water them until you see them break through the ground. Of course the bok is covered with a glass to keep the moisture in. We can talk more about this in the next few weeks, but get ready. P.S. There are some soft Wine boxes in the wine country that are perfect, because they don't rot for four or five years, and by that time you need to take them out and plant them. Another problem is keeping the names for over five years, but if you simply have unknown retics you don't have this problem. REE
Hi Bob! I have been trying to decide on two new plants for my garden. Wondering if you could advise? I have a spot where I need a fairly low growing camellia that will flower in a fairly shady area. I am thinking about 'Buttons n Bows'. I am also looking for a low growing, spreading sasanqua for a sunny spot. I am thinking about 'Rosette'. Both need to be fairly low and small so that the garden area behind it can be enjoyed properly.
Bob Ehrhart began his gardening career as a youth in New Orleans. Bob began growing camellias seriously in the early 1960s. And, he began raising camellias at his current site in 1965, over forty years ago. Today, Bob is among the world's premier camellia growers. He is a member and has held numerous leadership positions within the Northern California Camellia Society,
the American Camellia Society and
the International Camellia Society. Bob's garden is among the finest private camellia gardens. Bob has excelled in camellia show competitions, in which camellia blossoms are entered to be judged for beauty and quality. With a diverse collection of camellia species and a prolific garden, Bob is a frequent winner of the Sweepstakes trophy,
awarded for the most blue ribbons won in each show.
